What the grader checks

About 25 checks in four parts, each worth a fixed number of points. Every check shows the number we measured, so you can look it up yourself.

Google profile 25 points

Claimed, photos (against the local leaders), description, Book online link, hours, phone and website, extra categories.

Reviews 30 points

Star rating, review count and new reviews in the last 90 days, each against the top 3 in your city; the share of reviews you reply to, and how fast.

Found on Google & AI 30 points

Your Google Maps position for three searches in your city, your website's position in Google's web results, and whether ChatGPT names you.

Website & booking 15 points

Secure and mobile-friendly, online booking, prices or a quote form, tap-to-call, reviews on the page, text or chat, and mobile speed.

How we score, honestly

  • Against your city, not a national average. 40 reviews is a lot in a small town and few in Austin. Reviews, review pace and photos are measured against the median of the top 3 for your service in your city.
  • Only what we measured. If a check can't run, it shows "Not checked" and is left out of your score.
  • No scare numbers. We don't guess how much money you're losing. Every result is a fact you can check: a count, a date or a search position.
  • Real competitors, by name. You see who ranks above you for each search, with their ratings and review counts, exactly as Google Maps lists them.
  • The same answer every time. The score comes from fixed rules, not AI. AI only writes the short summary of what your customers say in their reviews.

Questions about the grader

Is the Business Grader really free?
Yes. The scan and the full report are free. We ask only for your email to show the full report, and we may follow up about it. You can unsubscribe at any time.
Where does the data come from?
From live public sources at the moment you scan: your Google Business Profile, your latest Google reviews, Google Maps and Google Search results for your city, ChatGPT's answer with web search turned on, and your homepage. Nothing comes from a stale database.
Who am I compared with?
With the businesses Google Maps ranks first for your main service in your city, for example "house cleaning in Austin, TX". Your report shows who ranks above you, by name, with their ratings and review counts, and compares your numbers with the top three.
How is the score calculated?
Every check has a fixed number of points: 25 for your Google profile, 30 for reviews, 30 for search and AI visibility and 15 for your website. Your score is the points you earned out of the points we could check. If a check can't run, for example your website blocks automated visits, it's left out of the score instead of counting against you.
Why is my Google Maps rank different from what I see?
Google Maps ranks by where the person searching is standing. We search for your service and city by name, the way a customer does from across town, so a search from your own street can show you higher.
How do I raise my score?
Each problem in your report comes with a plain fix. For most local service businesses the biggest gains are a steady flow of new reviews (ask every happy customer the day the job is done), replying to every review, more real photos, and letting customers book or request a quote online.
